What I think: Klune’s writing style isn’t for everyone, even I can admit that. But for those of us who love him, it is the peculiarity of it that makes us adore him. But this book is one of those that I believe is universally pleasing because of its crazy slew of characters. The foundation of the Verania tales are built on – Gary, the hornless gay unicorn. Tiggy, the half-giant. The KILF of Verania, the sarcastic prince Justin, Sam’s nutsy parents, his ever-patient mentor with his own sassy mentor, and of course Kevin. Watch as Sam, sweet, adorable Sam gets in and out of tight corners that somehow end in someone wanting to have sex with him. After the first 3 chapters, I promise you’ll be thinking the same question everyone asks after interacting with Sam – how are you even real? There are serious issues in this book and moments that will have you crying silent tears filled with wishes as you crave to shield Sam from the heartbreak that almost rends him apart. Klune handles all the grave problems with a lightness and comedy relief that just makes it all the more intense. You will also love and hate god of sass, Knight Delicious Face for being so honorable while breaking hearts. Sam is raised in love, filled with love and gives it back without censure. He is awkward bumbling and even though my bestie doesn’t see how he can be so dense as not to see what is right before your eyes, I know that it is something that can happen easily enough once you’ve convinced your mind that the object of your desire will never be yours. He is awkward, bumbling and even though my bestie doesn’t see how he can be so dense as not to see what is clear before his eyes, I know that it is something that can happen easily enough once you’ve convinced your mind that the object of your desire will never be yours. You will love each and every one of these seemingly simple yet complex characters. You’ll be laughing and crying while whooping for joy by the end of this tale. My fav bit? “Kevin! Make me billow!”
Verdict: Klune’s tales always induce a slight insanity that stays with you for a long time. Could induce laughter ringing out at odd moments or walking around with a smile like a loon. This book even more so. Don’t say I didn’t tell you.
